In everyday interaction with other people, we often try to figure out what kind of people they are, what they want, and what they intend to do. The various types of relationship we eventually form with other people — close or distant, cooperative or competitive — depends on how we perceive them. A great deal of social-psychological research has examined how we form impressions of other people and read their mind. This chapter reviews what we have learned from this research about the cognitive and motivational mechanisms that underlie the perception of people and the explanation of their behavior.
